Unless you’re going with something standard or stock, it’s probably best to enlist a professional on this. Even if you’re a deft hand in Photoshop or Illustrator, it can take a long time to get even the basics like font, color, and spacing looking good. And even if you make an original logo or artwork, it’s very hard to get it to look good alongside your business name.
As far as ideas, you might try browsing a library of symbols to jog your creativity and then the US Patent and Trademark Office’s database to make sure you don’t step on anyone’s registered logo.
Then you can go along to have some business cards printed. I got mine from Moo and was very pleased. Maybe don’t go ahead and have a huge amount printed in the first run, as things often run lighter/darker than you expect.
Finally, get some second, third, and fourth opinions before you finalize.
